Charles played cricket at Kilsyth Cricket Club for a number of years. He was a big man who was a handy batsman and spin bowler. He later turned to umpiring where he served the Association with great dedication over many years. Charles officiated across all grades, from the most senior down and is remembered as an active member of the Umpires Association where he rarely, if ever, missed a meeting. Surviving umpiring colleagues remember Charles as a 'lovely man, a true gentleman' and as a person who 'never had a bad word said about him.' Fine compliments indeed.
Charles worked as a teacher and was Headmaster at Kilsyth State School for some time, living across the road from the school in Mount Dandenong Road. He was awarded Life Membership of the Association in recognition of many years service and participation, particularly as a member of the Umpires Association and panel.
