“RDCA U21 Team Wins Last Round Match and Will Play in Semi-Finals.
Last Sunday the RDCA played its third round match against the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) at Cheong Park synthetic oval, transferring From Bayswater Park main turf oval due to prevailing wet weather conditions. Five squad members were unavailable due to injuries, trips and family commitments, leaving only the basic 11 players to participate.
MPCA won the toss and elected to bat in dull and drizzly conditions early in the innings. The opening batsmen got off to an excellent start playing some great cricket shots off in accurate bowling to be 0/111 at the 20 overs drinks break. The first wicket fell soon after at 118 then followed a steady flow of wickets due to much better line and length bowling and fielding, including three run outs, to achieve 10/154 in the 35th over. The two opening batsmen contributed 65 and 55 runs of that total. An incredible comeback leaving an achievable target. The RDCA wicket takers were Mitchell Crozier (SCR) 3/38 off 8 overs, Tristan Webb (WSO) 2/28 off 8 overs, Nick Mc Donald (WSO) 1/24 off 5 overs and one run out, Josh Exley (SWT) 1/3 off 2 overs with aone catch and one run out. Harry Lang (LYD) took one catch with Will Pleming (KIL) and Will Killen (APK) also involved in run outs. Wicket Keeper Dillon Bettess (APK) took two catches and assisted in the run outs in another good performance.
After lunch RDCA commenced its first innings and batting steadily to 2/71 but the lost quick wickets to reach 5/74. After as series of small partnerships the score climbed to 9/136 with the last pair of Dillon Bettess (APK) and Jordan Rutherford (BYP) putting on an unbroken partnership of 19 runs with the winning two runs coming off the last ball of the 40th over. A remarkable win which puts us into the semi-finals. Dillon Bettess was the best of the batsmen with 30 runs not out together with contributions from Harry Lang 20 runs, Brad Stewart (SCR) 19 runs, Will Killen 18 runs, Mitchell Crozier 16 runs and Will Pleming 13 runs. Thanks to Will Stewart (SCR) who substituted fielding in the latter part of the innings.
This win consolidated our place in the top four. A good overall performance let down by some inaccurate bowling in the early overs and also poorly executed shot making by a number of batsmen. All will need to improve to take the team into the grand final.
The Squad has achieved 2nd place on the ladder thus enabling the RDCA to host a home semi – final for the first time in many years. Confirmation has now been received that the semi-final match will be played against Cricket Southern Bayside (last season’s premiers) on Sunday 13th January 2019 at Bayswater Park No.2 oval, commencing at 10.00 am.
Craig Staggard and I would like to thank the ladies Mandy, Kim, Jenny and Judy for preparing the lunches at Cheong
