RDCA U/21 Team Suffers a First Round Loss
Last Sunday the RDCA played its first round match in the VMCU Neil Wright Shield against last season’s premiers, the Dandenong and District Cricket Association (DDCA), at Hallam Recreation Reserve in ideal conditions. With only four associations competing this season the top two teams will play off in the grand final in late January 2020. Thus it is important to win at least two out of three matches to ensure a place in the latter. Six squad members were unavailable leaving the team with only the required 12 players to participate. Will Pleming (KIL) was announced as RDCA Captain.
DDCA won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent hard batting pitch. All the DDCA batsmen scored freely throughout their innings with five batsmen making between 30 – 42 runs to compile a total of 8/260 off 40 overs. Unfortunately the RDCA bowlers sent down too many short and wayward balls, in addition to some fielding lapses. Best were Josh McCallum (MTR) 4/41 off 8 overs, Chris Williams (TMP) 2/5 off 1 over, Brad Stewart 1/35 (SCR) off 5 overs and Jon Williams (MEV) 1/39 off 5 overs.
After lunch RDCA commenced its first innings with an opening partnership of 60 runs off 10 overs. Wickets fell steadily between some cameo batting performances to finish at 10/176 off in the 38th over - an 84 run defeat. Main contributors were opener Tom Edwards (SCR) 44 runs, Brad Stewart (SCR) 32 runs, Sam Mulligan (LYD) 20 runs and opener Will Pleming (KIL) 18 runs. This was a disappointing loss against a high quality and disciplined all round DDCA team.
As this could be the last U/21 Competition we must win the next match, which will be played against the Eastern Cricket Association on Sunday 8th December 2019 at Lucas Oval, Jubilee Park, Ringwood (a home match), commencing at 10.00am. Hopefully the players can get some support from the RDCA cricket community in this very important match.
