Last Sunday the RDCA played its first round match against the Dandenong and District Cricket Association (DDCA) at Hallam Recreation Reserve in warm conditions. Unfortunately six squad members were unavailable, leaving the team with the required 12 players only.
RDCA won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a firm but crumbling pitch. A score of 10/157 was achieved in the 39th over with the main contributors being Will Pleming (KIL) with a great 84 runs and supported by Jack Le Bun (WSO) with 31 runs (including a partnership together of 74 runs. No other batsman achieved double figures. DDCA bowled 14 extras in the total.
After lunch DDCA commenced its first innings and batted steadily at the start to be 1/25. Then with some tight bowling together with excellent fielding and catching DDCA collapsed to be 8/80. A good partnership by two top order batsmen coming in late in the innings advanced the score to 8/133 before finishing with 10/141 in the 38th over – giving us a 16 run win. The RDCA wicket takers were opening spinner Jordan Rutherford (BYP) 2/18 off 8 overs plus two excellent low catches at mid on, Harry Lang (LYD) 2/18 off 6 overs, Luke O’Brien (CNT) 2/30 off 8 overs plus one run out, Lachlan Barrett (SCR) 1/18 off 5 overs plus two catches, Tristan Webb (WSO) 1/26 off 6 overs and Mitch Crozier (SCR) 1/16 off 2.3 overs. In addition Brad Stewart (SCR) gave an excellent wicket keeping performance including two smart catches. This was an excellent overall team performance against a strong and powerful opposition who are have been regular finalist over recent years.
Thanks to Paul Fleming for scoring and Michael Hancock for coaching and developing the team strategy with Craig Staggard.
The next match is now on Sunday 9th December against VTCA at Greenvale commencing at 10.00am. Our final match is on Sunday 16th December against Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association at Bayswater Park No.1. – our only home game.
