Croydon North Cricket Club was established in 1925. First World War Victoria Cross winner Wally Peeler was a member of the foundation team.

Apart from short recesses during the Depression (in 1933, but reformed in 1936 under the Congregational Church) and World War II (1941, but reformed in 1946), the club has always played at Hughes Park (or Brushy Creek Park) on Maroondah Highway at Croydon North. The club also now plays at Barngeong Reserve in Croydon North and may soon need for additional facilities to accommodate an increasing number of junior teams.

The club's first flag ('C' Grade) came in 1948-49. Captained by then Club Secretary - Reg Johnston who later became President of the Ringwood District Cricket Association (RDCA) during the period 1963 to 1967. Richmond VFL footballer Fred Cook was the opening bowler in this team.

The first junior team was entered in the (RDCA) competition in the 1954-55 season. This side was captained by Ken (The Colonel) Johnston. 1961 Hawthorn VFL Premiership player John MacArthur was a member of this team.

More success followed in 1961-62 when 'B' Grade flag came to Croydon North, captained by Ian (Lefty) Leach, earning the club promotion into the RDCA's top competition, 'A' Grade (subsequently renamed 'Chandler Shield' & at the start of the 2010/11 season renamed again to the 'Lindsay Trollope Shield'). The club played in Chandler Shield continuously from 1962-63 but was relegated to the 'Wilkins Cup' competition for the 2002-03 season. Two seasons later (2003/04) the club won the Wilkins Premiership & returned to Chandler Shield. Croydon North again came last during the 2004/05 season however as the Ferntree Gully Cricket Club left the RDCA at the end of that season we were allowed to remain in the highest grade. The club has remained playing in the highest grade since it had it's two year stint in Wilkins.

Nevertheless, Croydon North is the most successful on-field performer in the RDCA. Among our successes, we include:

  • 9 'Chandler Shield' Premierships, including 7 in 11 seasons between 1987-88 and 1997-98, including 3 in a row between 1989-90 and 1991-92. Croydon North remains the only club to have won the Chandler Shield 3 seasons in a row;
  • numerous club members playing first-grade cricket with Premier clubs in the VCA competition;
  • and one club member, Rod McCurdy, who played cricket for Australia
  • Croydon North were the first RDCA club to have an officially approved professional coach when Peter Brady returned to the club after 10 seasons with Richmond CC to coach our club to the 1972/73 Chandler Shield Premiership. Local cricketers have been the backbone of our success. To this end, we have recruited between 30 and 40 junior players to our club in each of the past 4 or 5 seasons. It is our stated policy to continue to focus on the local youth, to develop their skills and encourage them to aspire to achieve their best.
